A note from our Executive Director
From Creation to Creation
If, as Stephen Hawking told us, time and space are endless, so too is the human odyssey. The longer I live the more convinced I become that every creative act here on earth generates a new frontier to be explored. By taking creative action we are directly engaging with the unlimited field of possibility: our individual consciousness immersed in pure creation consciousness.
The performing arts exemplify this mystic aspect of our human reality, because the experience that is created exists only in the moment that it is happening. When it is over it lives somewhere in the imagination of the audience. Not even the performers possess it. You can’t go back and revisit it as you can with a painting, a sculpture, a building, a church or a piece of furniture. You can go to a second performance, but it will be a new and different experience.
My years in the theater have joyfully opened me to this aspect of our craft. When one is learning to act one is really learning how to be the mystic creature, we are all born to be. We hold the omniscient space that the playwright has structured while playing out the action of our very human natures. The air in the room is charged with a special energy and all are touched by it, actors and audience alike.
We return time and time again to that rarified environment because we must. It is in our nature to come together to explore and celebrate the mystery and miracle of our existence. Beginning with the earliest creation stories to perhaps a politically charged modern drama, we are consistently called to the theater’s ritual celebration of human complexity so that we may be moved by it either to laugh, or cry, or to be outraged. Always we seek to be moved, to feel ourselves in our full capacity to engage with life.

BONS Award 2021
I am so pleased to announce that The Studio has been awarded North of Boston Magazine’s BONS Award for 2021. We won both the Readers’ Choice and Editors’ Choice for Best small live/virtual venue for the whole North Shore. I congratulate all of our teachers, directors, writers, actors, and project producers. You all adapted brilliantly to the circumstances and challenges of 2020 and 2021, bringing a continuous flow of great material to our audiences. This honor is yours!
